Telekinetic Exercise
by Ludovica Gioscia
Opening 8 June - 22 June 2001
TELEKINESIS = movement at a distance from the motive cause or agent without material connection. In Ludovica's site-specific installation, 'telekinesis' is stripped out of Akira's apocalyptic context and into an every day life game. Digitally manipulated footage is played on a vertically positioned plasma screen.
There are many layers to uncover. The action is happening behind the same frames that contain cels in the gallery, but have here become 'virtual'.The cartoon becomes real footage and the real frames become intangible. The action is a simple telekinetic exercise carried out by two hands and a ping pong ball.
In Akira, Tetsuo's faculties are monitored through the growth of his aura. Here, as well, the whole action's aura is revealed. Akira's original soundtrack underlines the piece.
The central question in this installation is based on an issue raised during the film : What happens when 'unmastered powers' end in the wrong hands? The subject is here treated with humour and there is no apocalyptic consequence ...gags follow a telekinetic home experiment.
