And Or as Box - by Andrew Nelson
Exhibition 17th Feb to 20th March 1999

And Or As Box, a parallel to 'Pandoras Box' - It sits quietly waiting to be opened...
but will you like what you see inside?

An exhibition of digital prints 'On Canvas', Animation, digital 'Video Well'and Installation

IMAGE Artists Notes - Images can hold many meanings. I have always felt that they are best seen and interpreted by the viewer for their own value and experience through their own time space. However, it is often interesting to gain an insight into the creative development and expression from the artists point of view. The descriptions below are provided simply to give some background to my thought processes and creative symbolism.

It's not my intention to invest each work with an elaborate intellectual process, rather to express a deeply felt perception that is best explored through the use of personal symbols, forms, time, light and motion...

My aim in this exhibition was to use the space to its fullest advantage. The prints on the wall represent frozen moments in time. The 'Andoras Box' installation represents things that can be touched and felt. The digital animations represent experiences over time. Click to hear the midi sound track while viewing the pictures below. Click to look at some of the digital animations. All prints are available in 'Limited Editions'.

Intuition - The Anvil represents 'work to be done'. The Crystal, thoughts in action. The Statue, the view of spirit. The Manta Rays introduce the idea of an impending event. Together they combine to form an intuitive impression in an environment which resides outside 'normal' time.

Contemplation - The balance between thought, feeling and action. Action (the hand), Thought (the scales), Feeling (the zoetrope).   Moving past the obvious towards the projection of feelings.

Easy Street - A comment on current global finances. A sign of the times, where money has become the sole means to life and spirit just another commodity. Corporate Nirvana , the global slot machine….

Eye Stream - A stream of visual thought. Awareness of the moment represented as an image. A tribute to the 'Hippy' in all of us, waiting for the next psychedelic experience to break the monotony of modern life

Tangled Pearl - The Pearl that lies in the middle of a tangle of thoughts. Looking through to the heart of the matter.

And Her as Well - A combination of face images merged and processed into one image. Representing a blend between one gender and another. The two sides of all our natures. Overlooking Andoras Box.

HandRock - A texture taken from iron laiden rocks from South Australia seemed to typify the colours of Australia, made more intense by the use of the blue sky texture. The spiral set of hands draw you towards the land. A symbol of the friendly nature of the land.

Blue Moon - The month of the exhibition had two 'Blue Moons'. The opening coincides with the 'mid point' between the change in a rare lunar cycle. The image uses photographic mapping of an Australian sky wrapped around a sphere that forms the 'world' for all the objects. The sequence moves ever inward to the central point of mapping producing a 3D kaleidescope rippling around its own key

Souleye - The spirit world looking through to the world of matter. The ground is made from a multitude of faces forming the rock surfaces. The spirit world looks from the sky across the plains of matter. The image intends to portray the inter relationship of obtuse realities, although opposed by nature they occupy the same time space

IMAGE

Virus - An ordinary country scene until you notice the viral starfish and 'out of place' rock pools extending into the distance. A comment on the insidious spread of viruses like Hep C and HIV in our society. We may not recognise their existance but there are already over 200,000 people with Hep C in Australia.

Yang - The cosmos reflected in its own creation. Taken from the You Yang range in Victoria. An ancient aboriginal sacred site. Unfortunately the original tribes have all been abolished and all that remains is their spirit.
