MEDIA RELEASE - Home on the Range

The Freerange Animation team gives us a unique opportunity to showcase the inner workings of a contemporary animation studio. This brainchild of Andrew Horne and Deborah Szapiro provides a classic vehicle which takes us behind the scenes to witness the many disciplines involved in the making of an animated film.


This exhibition will showcase original artworks from the prize winning Falling Cats (from the Karl Kruszelnicki Great Moments In Science Series), as well as this year's Dendy Award winner Darwin's Evolutionary Stakes. It also gives a comprehensive overview of many of their other works including latex models, sets, props, preliminary sketches and backgrounds, allowing you to trace the evolutionary paths from conception to execution.

Deborah and Andrew have assembled an excellent team of artists so capable and diverse that nothing, it seems, is beyond their reach. Works for The Comedy Channel, Nickelodeon, TVCs, short films and series are entrenching them deeper and deeper into the psyche of our contemporary Australian culture.

As well as presenting original cels and stop motion paraphernalia, the Freerange whiz kids have come up with the interactive arcade machine, The Crap Zapper, that is guaranteed to shock you (as well as giving the treasurer Peter Costello something to think about!).

In the words of director Andrew Horne : "The elements we try to bring to our work are a fresh visual approach and a sense of humour. None of us are interested in recreating reality…". Deborah Szapiro adds : "Animation is a wonderful area to work in as it doesn't need to follow the same laws of gravity or reality as live action film making, so you can have a bit of fun with it. And, unless you have had a particularly hard day, the characters don't talk back to you."
